ULV’s Office of Emergency Preparedness staff will continue to monitor weather patterns closely. Should any significant changes occur, an immediate message will be sent.
Below are some tips to remain safe:
- Do not park near trees to prevent damage to your vehicles.
- Be alert to signs of flooding. If floodwaters are threatening your home or building, evacuate immediately. Move quickly to higher ground.
- If you drive and come upon rapidly rising waters, turn around and find another route. The water may appear calm on the surface but could flow rapidly below.

A message to the University of La Verne community from President Pardis Mahdavi on 8/19/2023:
Dear Campus Community,
Although we are excited for the start of the new semester, we understand that a severe storm is moving into Southern California this weekend. The oncoming storm is forecasted to arrive on Sunday, August 20, 2023, and it could impact students who are moving into residence halls, which include Vista La Verne, The Oaks, and Citrus Hall.
We have been advised that while inclement weather is forecasted, we may proceed with scheduled operations as usual, including this weekend’s move-ins. Our safety team works closely with local emergency officials in monitoring the local weather and we are committed to the safety and security of our students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
An advisory will be emailed shortly with safety tips. As well, we will continue to communicate updates promptly through our university channels, including our campus OMNILERT system, our ULV website, email, and on social media.
In the spirit of care, I ask that you remain safe and exercise caution while traveling during the next few days.
Thank you all for being a part of the Leo Community. I look forward to the start of an amazing school year.
Sincerely,
Pardis Mahdavi, PhD
President
A message from University of La Verne Campus Safety on 8/19/2023:
Hurricane Advisory
Expected heavy rain and winds on Sunday and Monday due to a tropical storm.
The National Weather Service is tracking a Category 4 Hurricane (Hilary) moving north approaching the southwestern United States. Hurricane Hilary is expected to become a tropical storm on Sunday and Monday, bringing heavy rains, flooding, and gusty winds in the southern California region.
There is a possibility the University of La Verne main campus will sustain heavy rain and winds starting Sunday evening. We continue to work with city emergency official in assessing the impact of the tropical storm to our community.
MOVE-IN DAY:
Operations at the University will continue over the weekend, and the scheduled move-in on Sunday will continue as planned. However, the unloading zones have been moved into the first floor parking structure. Additionally, move-in will be allowed on Saturday. If there are any changes in the weather that prevent school activities, you will be notified through our OMNILERT system and email.
An update message will be sent on Sunday after an evaluation of the storm impact it may have for Monday.
Floods & Heavy Rains – Safety Tips
- Stay inside your home or building if safe to do so.
- Stay away from windows and doors, even if they are covered.
- Do not park near trees to prevent damage to your vehicles.
- Be alert to signs of flooding. If floodwaters are threatening your home or building, evacuate immediately. Move quickly to higher ground.
- If advised to evacuate, do so immediately; move to a safe area before access is cut off by floodwater
- Follow recommended evacuation routes. Shortcuts or alternate routes may be blocked or damaged by floodwaters.
- If you are driving and come upon rapidly rising waters, turn around and find another route. The water may appear calm on the surface, but could be flowing rapidly below. Furthermore, the roadway may have been washed away by the water and no longer exist. The depth of the water may not be obvious and two feet of water will carry away most automobiles.
- Never drive across a flooded road. Most flood fatalities are caused by people attempting to drive through water.
