Ralph Nader Speaks at University of La Verne

Attorney, political activist, and former Presidential candidate Ralph Nader visited the University of La Verne on Feb. 22 to speak about the current political climate and how people can become more empowered.

Nader, 82, author of “Breaking Through Power: It’s Easier Than We Think,” spoke to students, faculty, and staff, who filled Morgan Auditorium. A reception and book signing followed from 1 to 1:45 p.m.

Dr. Matthew Witt, professor of public administration, said Nader’s work would be of interest to the University of La Verne community, from his career as a consumer advocate to fighting for the disenfranchised.

“For over 50 years, Ralph Nader has been a constant tribune of the people’s welfare and interest; a polestar for this nation’s best hopes and virtues,” Witt said.

Nader, who has been honored by Life magazine as one of the “100 Most Influential Americans of the 20th Century,” has led movements for consumer rights, open government, and humane business practices. His work has helped to shape national policies on car safety, food labeling, and public health campaigns.

The event wa supported by the International Studies Institute, the La Verne Debate Team, and the Office of the Provost.
