Honors Societies

The Global Ideas Honors Program is a University of La Verne-specific program, but there are many national and international honors societies that recognize exceptional students in specific disciplines or from specific backgrounds. We have a number of recognized chapters on campus. See below for more information.

Alpha Chi

California Theta Chapter

  • Advisor: Jerome Garcia
  • Criteria for invitation or selection: Top 10%, determined by GPA, of the junior and senior classes, and master’s students
  • Number of student members: 50 new members each year
  • Student leadership opportunities: President, VP, Treasurer, Secretary
  • Chapter events: Annual induction ceremony, other on-campus events, participation in annual national convention

  • Advisor: Gerard Lavatori
  • Criteria for invitation or selection: 3.5 GPA or above in first year of college study as full-time students
  • Number of student members: 20 new members each year
  • Student leadership opportunities: Pres. VP, Treasurer, Secretary, Editor, Historian, Jr. Advisor, Sr. Advisor
  • Chapter events: Annual induction ceremony, other events have included offering tutoring, greeting card writing events, fund raising

California Omicron Chapter

Anthropology

  • Criteria for invitation or selection:
    1. A minimum of 12 units completed in anthropology*,
    2. A minimum of a 3.0 GPA in those anthropology courses,
    3. A minimum of a 2.5 cumulative GPA.
  • Number of student members: ~10
  • Student leadership opportunities: President, VP, Treasurer, Secretary
  • Chapter events: A variety; anthropology movie nights, homecoming parade float contest, etc.

* As our department is a combined sociology/anthropology department, a student may count up to 6 units of sociology course work towards these requirements.


National Society of Leadership & Success

  • Criteria for invitation or selection: Minimum GPA of 2.75
  • Number of student members: Over 650 current student members
  • Student leadership opportunities: Student VP, Success Networking Team (SNT) Coordinator, Fundraising Chair, IT Coordinator, Society Events Chair, Community Service Chair, Membership Outreach Chair, Social Events Chair.
  • Chapter events: Induction, orientation, leadership training opportunities

History

  • Criteria for invitation or selection: Invited if: 3.0 GPA overall; 3.1 GPA in History; at least 4 completed courses in history (incl. transfer)
  • Number of student members: ~20
  • Student leadership opportunities: Executive Board: President, VP, Historian, Secretary, Treasurer
  • Chapter events: Monthly movies, occasional trivia, spring regional conference, and annual induction ceremony

  • Criteria for invitation or selection:
    • Undergraduate: 20 units in social sciences with GPA 3.0 AND top 35% class standing.
    • Graduate students: must be pursuing advanced degree in social sciences and completed 9 grad units.

Psi Chi

Psychology

  • Advisor: Ngoc Bui
  • Criteria for invitation or selection: Inducted to membership if overall GPA is > 3.30 and psychology only courses (including transferred courses) is >3.30. Must have completed at least 3 psychology courses at La Verne and be a sophomore or higher. No attendance or participation requirement for induction to lifetime membership.
  • Number of student members: ~50 on roster each year; approximately 20 active members attending meetings
  • Student leadership opportunities: Executive Board: President (Undergrad), President (Graduate), VP, Treasurer, Secretary, Historian, Public Relations Chair, Philanthropy Chair, Special Events Chair, Research Chair
  • Chapter events: Weekly meetings; annual Student Research Conference held at La Verne; semi-annual induction ceremony; ongoing research lab; funding for and attendance to regional psychological conference held in various states; philanthropy events
