Students are placed on academic probation (AP) when their cumulative GPA falls below a 2.0 (“C” average).
Students are required to earn a 2.0 GPA each semester while they are on academic probation, until their cumulative GPA reaches above a 2.0. If a student does not earn a 2.0 GPA while on academic probation, they will be academically disqualified. You can read more about each academic standing here.
Academic Probation Instructions
When you are on Academic Probation (AP), you have two paths forward to choose from. Option 1 requires that you modify your schedule so that you are enrolled in no more than 14 semester hours. Option 2 allows you to maintain your current schedule, or more than 14 semester hours, by agreeing to utilize our on campus resources that support your success.
Select an option below by the first day of the new semester, then move forward with steps of the option you select by the specified deadlines.
Option 1Reduced Course Load (14 units Max) |
Option 2Academic Success Contract & Maintain Current Course Load |
This option requires that you take a maximum of 14 semester hours per semester while you are on AP. A lighter course load gives you more time to focus on improving your grades.
If you choose this option, follow these steps:
*If you do nothing after being notified you are on academic probation, the Advising office will automatically select this option for you, and modify your schedule to not exceed 14 semester hours. |
This option allows you to enroll in more than 14 units, if you complete an Academic Success Contract. The contract requires that you attend academic coaching sessions and our Path to Progress series. These requirements help support your success while enrolled in more than 14 units.
If you choose this option, follow these steps:
*Review and follow all instructions given to you in the Academic Success Contract. |

If you’re facing academic challenges and wondering whether undiagnosed ADHD, a learning disability, or mental health concerns could be playing a role, consider a free psychoeducational evaluation offered through Accessibility Services.
Evaluations are conducted by graduate psychology interns from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, working under the supervision of a licensed clinical psychologist (PsyD).
This process can help uncover barriers to learning and may support your eligibility for academic accommodations.
Please note: Completing an evaluation does not guarantee academic accommodations. Eligibility is determined based on whether results meet the legal criteria for a disability.
Email accessibilityservices@laverne.edu to get more information or join the waitlist.
Student Outreach and Support
Student Outreach and Support (SOS) works together with students to help them overcome challenges that can affect their academic and personal success. If you are in distress, or experiencing food insecurity, you can submit a self-referral here.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did I receive a letter that I am on Academic Probation?
If your overall GPA falls below 2.0 then you will be placed on academic probation. If you are on academic probation, you must obtain a ULV GPA of 2.0 or above each academic term until the cumulative ULV GPA meets or exceeds 2.0. You will not be eligible to enroll in the culminating activity or be cleared for Commencement until academic probation is removed.
What happens if I do not earn a 2.0 GPA while on Academic Probation?
If you fail to earn a ULV GPA of 2.0 in any semester after being placed on academic probation, you will be academically disqualified. Academic disqualification will be recorded on the transcript. If this occurs, you will not be eligible to enroll in La Verne classes for one year, after which you can appeal for reinstatement or reapply with proof of academic success elsewhere.
If you are disqualified for the first time, you may appeal for reinstatement and resume an academic probation status. You must maintain a ULV GPA of 2.0 or better every academic term until you resume good standing (an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher). If you are disqualified a second time–failed to earn a ULV GPA of 2.0 or higher in any academic term–then you must leave ULV for one academic year to take courses elsewhere and prove that you can be successful before returning to ULV by appeal reinstatement.
What if I do nothing after receiving my Academic Probation letter?
If you choose to do nothing, the Advising office will reduce your schedule to no more than 14 units. You have until the first week of the semester to modify your schedule, or it will be done for you. If you would like to maintain a schedule above 14 semester hours, you must follow the instructions above for the “Academic Success Contract and maintain current course load” option.
I’m still confused, who can I ask for help?
Please email advising@laverne.edu so that the Advising office can connect you with an advisor and answer your questions.
